Being a Disciple of Jesus Christ

Being-a-disciple-of-Jesus-Christ

Discipleship is not a calling for just missionaries, pastors, preachers, evangelists, and those who are serving God in full-time ministry, but for every believer in Christ. All believers are called to be disciples and to make disciples. You cannot say that you are saved and just wait for eternity, without fulfilling God’s purposes for you on earth. Your entrance to heaven is assured at the time of your salvation. You were saved when you put your faith in God for receiving the Gift of Eternal Life. However, rewards in Heaven are dependent on your works, which you do by depending on God’s guidance and strength.

Here are a few things that are expected from a disciple of Jesus Christ.

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ: Bearing your Cross

Every disciple of Jesus Christ must bear his cross, which means he must choose to follow Christ, amid criticisms, insults and oppositions.

Luke 14:27 KJV- And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ: Use your Gift

Every believer of God is given unique gifts and talents that are supposed to be used for God’s glory. Whether it is teaching other believers, helping the needy with money and food, donating for evangelism and missionary organizations, volunteering in church activities, you should use your gifts for His kingdom.

Ephesians 4:11-17 KJV- And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ: Love God above everything else

Relationships are good and all good blessings are from God. Be thankful for every blessing God has given you, but never let anything turn into an idol. Anything that you place above God is an idol.

Luke 14:26 KJV- If any [man] come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

Luke 14:33 KJV - So likewise, whosoever he is of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ: Continue in God’s Word

Read your Bible and meditate on God’s Word every day. The Bible is not just a knowledge book. The Word of God is alive and has the power to change our soul, heart, desire and passions. God speaks to us through His Word. You cannot draw close to God and His purposes without soaking yourself with His Word.

John 8:31-32 KJV - Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, [then] are ye, my disciples, indeed;

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ: Continue in Fellowship

We belong to the family of God. The Church is not a building, but the body of Christ. Love other members of God’s family and continue in fellowship with them.

Acts 2:42 KJV - And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and breaking of bread, and in prayers.

Being a disciple of Jesus Christ: Sound doctrine

In a world full of false doctrines and false teachings such as legalism, the misleading and dangerous prosperity gospel, mystical experiences and false prophetic revelations etc., cling to the true Gospel and sound doctrine, even though it is not popular. Expose false teachings and correct fellow believers who have fallen prey to such false teachings.

Titus 2:1-8 KJV - But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine:
